Roy W. Allen opened his first root beer stand in Lodi, California on June 20, 1919. Allen offered his drink at a parade to honor returning World War I veterans. In 1922, Allen and Frank Wright partnered to create the name A&W, with "A" standing for Allen and "W" standing for Wright. In 1925, Allen began selling franchises, establishing the first franchise restaurant chain in the United States.
A&W root beer was originally sold through curb-side service in drive-in restaurants, and not bottled until 1971. A&W's signature root beer was made fresh on-site with real cane sugar and a proprietary blend of herbs, bark, spices and berries.
